Mountain Zebra National Park upgraded

The Mountain Zebra National Park, in the Eastern Cape recently celebrated the opening of their upgraded facilities, including a new entrance gate and the complete renovation of its tourist roads.

"Visitors can now explore all areas of the park when viewing wildlife. The roads are now suitable for all vehicle types," said Lucius Moolman, South African National Parks ( SANParks) regional manager at the official launch.

Funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs Infrastructure Development Programme, the renovations included the upgrade of 42.7km of existing gravel road and the construction of 13.4km of new roads.
The new gate was sponsored by Sasol and was named accordingly, in recognition of the company's contribution to the park's expansion programme, other sponsors included The Barbara Delano Foundation, WildAid and Vesta Medicines.
The park expansion led to the reintroduction of buffalo, cheetah and brown hyena into the park.

Park manager, Lesley-Ann Meyer said the wider spectrum of wildlife viewing and landscapes had led to an increase in both day and overnight visitors.
"Visitor numbers have increased by a massive 40% and occupancy rate has increased from 61% to 70%."

An announcement was made that plans are underway to link Mountain Zebra National Park with the Camdeboo National Park in Graaf-Reniet .
